The Early Years

The Badgers football program was founded in 1889. The team's first game was a 6-0 victory over the Beloit College Trojans. In the early years, the Badgers played their home games at various locations around the city of Madison. In 1917, the team moved into its permanent home, Camp Randall Stadium. The stadium has been expanded and renovated over the years, but it remains one of the most iconic venues in college football.

The Badgers enjoyed early success under head coach Harry Stuhldreher. Stuhldreher, who was a member of the legendary "Four Horsemen" at Notre Dame, led the Badgers to three Big Ten championships in the 1920s. In 1931, the Badgers won their first Rose Bowl, defeating the Stanford Indians 27-0. The win marked the beginning of a long and successful tradition of Rose Bowl appearances for the Badgers.

The Golden Age

The Badgers' golden age came in the 1950s and 1960s under head coach Milt Bruhn. Bruhn led the Badgers to four Big Ten championships and three Rose Bowl victories. The 1959 Badgers team, which was led by Heisman Trophy winner Alan Ameche, is considered one of the greatest college football teams of all time. The Badgers finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record and defeated Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, 23-7.

Bruhn's successor, John Jardine, continued the Badgers' success in the 1970s. Jardine led the Badgers to three Big Ten championships and two Rose Bowl appearances. The 1973 Badgers team, which was led by All-American running back Brent Musburger, finished the season with a 10-2 record and defeated USC in the Rose Bowl, 19-10.

Recent Success

The Badgers have continued to enjoy success in recent years under head coach Paul Chryst. Chryst has led the Badgers to three Big Ten championships and one Rose Bowl victory. The 2017 Badgers team, which was led by Heisman Trophy finalist Jonathan Taylor, finished the season with a 13-1 record and defeated Miami in the Orange Bowl, 34-24.

Traditions

The Wisconsin Badgers football program is known for its rich traditions. One of the most famous traditions is the "Jump Around" song. The song is played at the end of the third quarter of every home game, and the entire stadium jumps up and down in unison. Another popular tradition is the "Fifth Quarter." After every home game, the Badgers players and coaches sing the UW fight song, "On, Wisconsin!" with the fans.

The Badgers also have a number of unique traditions that are associated with their rivalry with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. One of these traditions is the "Paul Bunyan's Axe." The axe is awarded to the winner of the annual game between the two schools. The Badgers have won the axe 63 times, while the Gophers have won it 29 times.

Unforgettable Moments

The Wisconsin Badgers football program has produced many unforgettable moments over the years. Here are a few of the most memorable:

  • The 1962 Rose Bowl: The Badgers defeated the USC Trojans 42-37 in a thrilling Rose Bowl game. The game is considered one of the greatest Rose Bowl games of all time.
  • The 1973 Rose Bowl: The Badgers defeated the USC Trojans 19-10 in the 1973 Rose Bowl. The win was the Badgers' first Rose Bowl victory since 1963.
