Sam Snead is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time. With 82 PGA Tour victories, he ranks second only to Tiger Woods in career victories. Snead was also a three-time major champion, winning the Masters Tournament in 1949, 1952, and 1954.

Early Life and Career

Samuel Jackson Snead was born on May 27, 1912, in Hot Springs, Virginia. He began playing golf at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was one of the top amateur golfers in the country. Snead turned professional in 1934, and he quickly became one of the most successful golfers on the PGA Tour.

Snead was known for his smooth, effortless swing. He was also a gifted shotmaker, and he could hit the ball with great accuracy and distance. Snead's success on the golf course was due in part to his dedication to practice. He was known to spend hours on the practice range, working on his swing and honing his skills.

Major Championships

Snead won his first major championship at the 1949 Masters Tournament. He followed that up with victories at the 1952 and 1954 Masters. Snead also finished second in the Masters a record six times.

In addition to his three Masters titles, Snead also won the 1946 PGA Championship. He finished in the top five in 25 major championships, and he was a member of the United States Ryder Cup team eight times.

Later Career

Snead continued to play competitive golf into his 60s. He won his final PGA Tour event at the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open, at the age of 53. Snead also played in the Senior PGA Tour, where he won six tournaments.

Snead retired from competitive golf in 1983, but he remained active in the game. He worked as a golf commentator and instructor, and he continued to give golf lessons until his death in 2002.
