Plot Summary
The Republic of San Magnolia, shielded by an autonomous army of unmanned drones, remains oblivious to the true horrors of the war raging on its borders. Behind the safety of these drones, hidden in a forgotten corner of the country, live the 86, a group of young people deemed subhuman and forced to pilot these drones in a life-or-death struggle against the invading Legion.
Amidst this grim setting, we follow the story of Shinei Nouzen, a young 86 and the leader of his squadron, Spearhead. Shin and his comrades endure constant danger and discrimination, their dreams and aspirations crushed under the weight of their unjust fate. But as they face the horrors of battle and the apathy of their superiors, they refuse to give up hope.
Characters
Shin Nouzen: The protagonist of the story, Shin is a gifted tactician and a fierce warrior. Despite the discrimination he faces, he remains determined to protect his comrades and find a place where they can be free.
Lena Milizé: A young woman who works in the Republic's military as a Handler, responsible for commanding drone squads. Lena is appalled by the treatment of the 86 and sets out to learn more about their plight.
Raiden Shuga: The resident sniper of Spearhead Squadron, Raiden is a loyal and skilled soldier. He is haunted by the memories of his family, who were killed during the war.
Anju Emma: The squadron's medic, Anju is a kind and compassionate girl who cares deeply for her comrades. She provides medical care and emotional support in the midst of battle.
Theo Erica: The strategist of the squadron, Theo is a brilliant tactician who uses his skills to outsmart the enemy and protect his comrades.
Themes
War and Its Horrors: The novel vividly depicts the brutality of war, exposing the physical and emotional scars it inflicts on soldiers and civilians alike.
Identity and Discrimination: The story explores the concepts of identity and discrimination, as the 86 are denied their humanity and treated as mere tools of war.
Human Connection: Despite the horrors they face, the 86 form unbreakable bonds of friendship and camaraderie, proving that even in the darkest of times, human connection can triumph.
Hope and Determination: Even amidst despair, the characters cling to hope, fighting for a future where they can live with dignity and respect.
Writing Style
Asato Asato's writing is both lyrical and raw, capturing both the beauty and the brutality of war. The novel's pacing is excellent, seamlessly blending intense action scenes with moments of reflection and character development. The dialogue is sharp and authentic, bringing the characters to life.
